Checking with the hotel receptionist, they found out that she hadn't checked out. "And if the chambermaid had found anything wrong in her room when she made it up this morning, I'm sure she would have mentioned it," the woman behind the desk said.

Eventually they managed to persuade her to give them a key to Edith's room so that they could check it for themselves. When they did so, they found that everything seemed to be in order, with her toiletries still in the bathroom, her clothes still hanging up in the wardrobe or in the drawers, and her suitcase in the corner of the room, but that her cell phone was on the bedside table. Where could she have gone, and why hadn't she taken her phone with her? Perhaps her most recent activity on the phone might have provided them with a clue, but they found that it was locked and they didn't know the password.

1. Presuming that Edith must have gone on a day trip somewhere, they decided not to do anything further unless she didn't reappear that evening.
2. They were still concerned, and tried to think of some way they might find out where she had gone.
3. Meanwhile Edith had fallen into a ravine in the recreation park and was injured badly enough that she could't climb out. She was cursing herself for not having brought her cell phone.
4. Edith had spotted a mysterious glowing portal and couldn't resist walking into it. She didn't end up in Australia, by any chance?
