"Yes, we did," Astra says. "I'm Astra and that's Exotica. Seeing how bloody your face is, I was afraid that you might be concussed like Belboz there seems to be" - she gestures to where he still lies on the ground - "but if you could recognise us then it doesn't look like you are. I'd offer you a restorative drink and a damp cloth to wipe your face off - or even a bath! - but unfortunately we seem to be in the middle of a desert and we don't have any water."

"It looks like even a piece of cloth to wipe my face might be in short supply," Stacy says, feeling sufficiently recovered to make a joke.

"Oh, you mean Exotica and I being in our underwear? It's just so damned hot here that we felt compelled to strip down to the minimum that decency requires. But remembering that you even seem to take your baths fully clothed, I don't suppose you'll be joining us."

Stacy manages a weak smile but doesn't respond.

"As you seem to be pretty much OK, Stacy, I think I'd better go back to tending to Belboz," Exotica says. "He seems to be in a pretty bad way."

1. Astra asks Stacy who Edgar is and how she and Edgar came to travel through the portal.
2. Meanwhile Edgar and Chamuel are continuing to argue loudly.
3. Before Exotica can go to check on Belboz, yet another portal manifests, and out steps private detective John Thessamar, who had been following both Edgar and Chamuel.
