Edith had found that she and the two friends whom she had come to visit no longer seemed to have as much in common as they had once had. Bill and Alice had recently become engaged, and when Edith was with them she felt rather like a spare part. It wasn't that Bill and Alice were being deliberately unfriendly, just that they seemed to have eyes only for each other. So Edith had been spending a lot of time exploring Miles City on her own. But, with a population of only just over 8,000, there wasn't a great deal in town to be explored. So she was starting to get really bored, and was regretting having turned down her elder brother's offer to join his group. Little did she know that that group was faring no better than she was; just as she hadn't wanted to spoil Jim's vacation by telling him her problems, he hadn't wanted to spoil hers by telling her his.
But things were about to get a lot more interesting for Edith. Unfortunately it wouldn't be interesting in a good way.
