It Must Be Lunch-time, Surely?

Horsehockey V - Episode 1911

Edith could see the tops of skyscrapers in the distance, so realised that her initial impression that she was in a small town miles from anywhere must be mistaken. It looked like this must be a suburb of some sizeable city. But which city? Though the sea wasn't far away, she couldn't actually see it from where she was, so didn't at first realise that she was on an island. Not until she noticed that she was on City Island Avenue, that is, and that the diner opposite was called the City Island Diner. So was this town called City Island? It seemed a very generic sort of name and didn't help her at all, since she hadn't heard of New York's City Island.

Her musing was interrupted by her becoming aware that enticing smells were drifting across the street from said diner. They made her realise that she was hungry. Asking someone in the diner where she was seemed like as good a plan as any, she thought.

She crossed the street and examined the large sign in the window promoting their Fall Special. There were five different beers on tap, so the place seemed to be a bar as well as a diner. The sign also promoted "Beer & Brats!" For $10.95 she could have a bratwurst on a bun with saeurkraut and mustard, with a side of warm German potato salad. It didn't say that a beer would be included, but surely the "beer and brats" implied that? Though if it did, it would be remarkably cheap, judging by the prices of the dishes on the regular menu, which was also displayed in the window. She walked inside and chose a vacant table.

  1. She liked beer, and decided that a Sam Adam's Oktoberfest and a bratwurst would hit the spot.
  2. "Irish Shepard's Pie" sounded good, even if they couldn't spell "shepherd".
  3. "Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings" seemed a bargain at $17.95. Wait a minute? Hadn't it been August back in Miles City? So why was it on the menu? And why had the sign promoted a Fall Special? Could she have been transported in time as well?
  4. She decided on a healthier (and cheaper) option, the chicken salad.
