Horsehockey V - Episode 1776

When there was a brilliant flash of light, Bill's instinctive reaction was to brake. It was as well that he did. When the world returned, it was their great good fortune that their vehicle had materialised on a road rather than in the middle of a field, say. But it was a winding two-lane road, and had Bill not braked so promptly they would have finished up in a roadside stream.

The vehicle came to a stop half on the road and half on a grass verge. Bill put on the handbrake. "What the fuck just happened?" he said, his voice shaking a little.

"I..." Edith began. She was interrupted by a car appearing around a bend in the road. It swerved to avoid hitting them, blaring its horn as it did so.

"He was driving on the wrong side of the road," Alice said indignantly.

"Perhaps not," Edith said. "I noticed his number plate. It wasn't a US plate. I think we might not be in Montana - or even in America - anymore, but somewhere where they drive on the left." Thanks to having been involved in a few very strange situations as a result of her brother Jim's weird science experiments, she was less shaken up than the other two.

"How can we not be in Montana?" Bill said. "That's ridiculous."

"Does this look anything like the road we were on?" Edith said. "We've definitely been transported somewhere, so why not to another country?" She pulled out her phone from her bag. "At least there's a phone signal. According to GPS, we're at 45 degrees south, 171 degrees east. That doesn't mean much to me, but I know that we're a very long way from home. Let me call up Google Maps... Right, we appear to be a few miles outside a town called Oamaru on the South Island of New Zealand. I guess we'd better drive into town, remembering to stay on the left."

  1. They do that.
  2. The engine won't start. Perhaps it didn't like being teleported.
  3. Bill and Alice are still in denial, and insist that there must be a fault with Edith's phone.
