Edith was concerned that her friends - for all that they might not have been paying her much attention - might be worried about her, and she was right about that. However there seemed to be some sort of problem with the local phones at the moment, and she was unable to get through to either her friends, the US Embassy or her brother. She was in a bit of a spot, as she had neither her credit card nor her passport with her. (She had left her bag containing her credit card in her car, not wanting to be encumbered with it when walking over rough terrain.)
As she put down the phone, about to walk back across the foyer to the reception desk in the hope of talking them into letting her have a room for the night, three people approached her who bore a striking resemblance to Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich. "Excuse me, Ma'am," the Morgan Freeman look-alike said very politely, "but the desk were telling us about you and about how you've somehow turned up here without any money or documents. As we're also Americans, on vacation here, we wondered if we could be of any assistance." Edith told them her story. When she came to the bit about the portal, the former CIA agents (though of course they hadn't told Edith about that):
